3D-Printed Bionic Hand Developed by West Virginia Teen Earns National STEM Honor

A middle school student from West Virginia has gained national acclaim after designing and building an affordable, functional 3D-printed bionic hand. Kianoosh Nawai, an eighth-grader enrolled at West Virginia Virtual Academy, was officially selected as the state’s sole finalist in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, one of the premier middle school science contests in the United States.

Nawai developed the low-cost prosthetic device to address the high financial barrier associated with traditional medical prosthetics. Using desktop additive manufacturing tools, he fabricated the mechanical components of the hand and conducted extensive testing on its practical functionality, measuring both grip strength and multi-finger articulation.

The competitive nationwide event drew nearly 2,000 entries from middle school researchers across the country. Nawai’s innovative approach to accessible prosthetic technology impressed the judging panel, earning him a place among just 30 finalists who will travel to Washington, D.C., to compete at the national level.

Conventional prosthetic limbs often cost thousands of dollars, making them financially out of reach for many families, especially growing children who frequently outgrow their devices. By demonstrating that an effective 3D-printed bionic hand can be engineered using accessible materials, Nawai highlighted how modern technology can dramatically lower healthcare expenses while maintaining high operational utility.

The Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge celebrates exceptional talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It encourages young scholars to apply scientific principles to solve urgent, real-world problems through hands-on technical invention and rigorous experimentation.
